Olympic National Park, Washington

To get a flavor of Olympic National Park's wild beaches and the powerful Pacific that grinds them down, one must visit Ruby Beach in the Kalaloch Lodge area off US 101. Ruby Beach has a mix of sand and smooth cobble-like stones, with a heavy layer of driftwood at the foot of the bluffs. President Theodore Roosevelt protected Olympic as a national monument in 1909, and his distant cousin President Franklin D. Roosevelt designated it as a national park in 1938.

Location: Ruby Beach, Olympic National Park, Washington.
